Conventional wisdom says we should start investing as soon as possible. The younger you are when you begin, the more time you have to build interest and the more money you’ll bank. But, for many of us (at least for me) investing still feels scary. When I think of investing and investors I imagine lots of stuffed suits with overly coiffed hair, carrying briefcases and trying to convince me to put my money in some big box superstore because ‘it’s a ‘sure’ thing’. At this point in my life, those types of investments are completely opposite of who I am as a person.
However, the reality is I’m in my early 30’s and putting off investing any longer could have a detrimental effect on my future. I want to get started with a plan, but I still struggle with understanding how to pick investments that are a) “good” and b) reflect my values and allow me to ‘vote with my dollars’. In recent years there have been some services that seem more user-friendly and geared towards newbie investors. But now, there’s something that helps you not only invest, but also put your money where it can make a difference.
‘COIN’ Helps You Invest in the Companies Supporting the Causes You Care About Most.
COIN is a mobile-friendly, conscious investing platform that turns the causes you care about into investment opportunities. It will help you build a diverse investment portfolio using a custom mix of companies making a difference in the areas you care about most. Instead of looking through company names, you choose your ‘Impact Areas’. Selections include causes like gender equality, climate action, shared prosperity, and waste reduction.
One of my motivations for becoming vegan was to reduce my carbon footprint and the amount of trash I produce. COIN offers you the ability to invest in companies that support the environment, in addition to a variety of impact areas.
I became vegan for several reasons, and I remain vegan for several others like climate change, waste reduction, food scarcity and water toxicity. I’ve been making a bigger and bigger effort to drive change with my personal choices – like what I buy, what I wear and what I eat – and I’m always looking for more ways to live a lifestyle that further supports the things I care about. While I’m not personally a client, I like that COIN’s philosophy is aligned with these values. It helps you with something we all need to do – like plan for the future – while allowing you to put your money where your values are.
