Dolla Dolla Bill Y’all: Vegan Black Friday Sales

In recent years, especially since becoming vegan, I’ve tried to limit my consumerism to some degree. However, the only thing I hunt is bargains and a sale is a sale (is a sale). If I’m going to buy something I’d like to keep as much of my green as possible WHILE continuing to support green, vegan and cruelty-free brands/businesses. Here’s some of the notable Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales happening right now: FASHION Brand: LaBante London: Luxury vegan handbags, laptop bags and sunglasses Deal: Up to 60% Off Select Styles AND up to 20% off of their New Collection. Get Some Pumpkin in Your Life!

‘Tis the Season. THE SEASON FOR PUMPKIN! *cue demonic laughter* While I am not, and never have been, a PSL devotee (tho I hear they’re making vegan ones now), I am a huge fan of pumpkin. In part because from stem to seed – and everything in between – it’s so dang good for you! Pumpkin can help you: Lose Weight & Lower Blood Sugar: the high fiber content in low-calorie pumpkin helps your body absorb sugar slower and keeps you feeling full longer – which means less snacking! Most Americans average just 15g of fiber a day,  which is barely half of the recommended levels of 25-30g a day.…

I Quit Washing My Face (and My Skin Looks Better Than Ever)

Oily skin isn't tough-as-leather skin. It's can actually be quite sensitive, even if it is thicker than other skin types. And it often overproduces oil because it's out of balance due to LACK of moisture - NOT because it needs to be 'dried out'.

A Good Scrubbing: OZ Naturals Ancient Orient Bamboo Dermafoliant Review

So, you guys may remember, a few weeks ago my skin started acting up. Sometimes I start having issues when the temperature or season changes and it can also be brought on by flying from one climate (sunny and humid Hawaii) to another (dry and hot Arizona). After our last trip, I had enlarged pores across my upper cheeks, a patchy oil slick for a forehead and my poor nose was flaking and angry from all the extra tissue action during my last cold. I did an Aztec Indian Healing Clay mask and spot treatments, and, while it helped a TON, I still needed some help getting my skin’s texture back on…

B E A M M E U P Years and years of gobbling up B E A M M E U P

Years and years of gobbling up architectural content and I've never seen beams quite like these in a house before. They're wooden (I think), not load bearing and suspended from the wood clad ceiling some 20 ft above the great room floor. When I saw them in person I said 'they have flying buttresses inside!' I don't know if these count as 'real' buttresses but I love how they emphasize the ceiling height and the drama they bring to this space.

I also love that I could hang a giant swing from them in a pinch. 😉

Since they're not load bearing, they could be removed but I can't even imagine getting rid of them. We want to preserve the unique features here, not take them out or cover them up.
One of the most unique features of our new home is One of the most unique features of our new home is the gigantic, floor-to-ceiling, copper framed fireplace that extends both into the living room and into the backyard - meaning you can enjoy it from either side.

I've seen indoor pass-through fireplaces, but never one quite like this! It's also shockingly good at heating the entire house within a matter of minutes, which will save $$ on energy bills.

Plan is to have a nice, comfy seating area both inside and out so we can make the most of it. 🙌🏾

'The Unicorn' Anyone who knows us knows we've lon 'The Unicorn'

Anyone who knows us knows we've long been bit by the RE bug. After our first major reno together about 5 years ago I got my license and we've been buying & selling ever since. We've managed to stay put for the last two years (almost a record!) but being holed up together put us into nesting mode. We began thinking about our 'unicorn' property... What kind of space would we want? What area would we live in? Dreaming quickly turned into MLS search alerts (a dangerous side effect of having a license) and we added more detail to the idea.

As the dream got bigger and bigger (and the local housing market got crazier & crazier) it seemed less likely that our forever home existed but every weekend we inhaled more Architectural Digest, crammed on architecture shows, read more Dwell and continued to plan.

Top of my list was land for planting and privacy. I'd been dreaming of a little food forest filled with homegrown fruit, veggies and medicine that could fill most of our needs. B wanted more outdoor space for fresh air and entertaining. After a year away from everyone we loved the idea of a place our families could enjoy on visits. We both agreed it needed to be special, with architectural elements that made it feel unique to Phoenix - bonus points awarded for being built using natural, sustainable materials - and be energy/water efficient.

And, wouldn't you know it, we found our Unicorn after all.

Towards the end of 2020, about a month after we eloped and a day before Thanksgiving, B & I quietly closed on our first home.

For the past few months we've alternated between pinching ourselves, marveling over details of the house (those sconces! that door!) poring over Pinterest and carefully working through interior and exterior reno plans.

We're working with some amazing local businesses to bring our dream to life. In the past two weeks we've already finalized our first round of interior renders, reviewed our microclimate plan and grow list (more on that later) and scheduled our next design appointment to begin planning the garden build out. Full 'before' tour coming soon - stay tuned!
How's your week going so far? I'm blowing off a li How's your week going so far? I'm blowing off a little steam goofing off with single take in my office like people can't see me. 😅 Got AMAZING news on something home/garden related that I've been working on the last few weeks! It's a secret for now, but I'll be sharing soon. 🙌🏾

We grow leafy greens & herbs like kale, swiss chard, parsley, and a variety of lettuces on 3 Tower Gardens in our office. We use mostly 'come again' harvesting techniques so they continue to grow all season long. When they're ready, I harvest and put pags together for employees to take home. 🥰
